Scaffolding collapses on top of cars in East Sussex - In pictures

Fire crews assisted at the scene of an incident in Hove – where scaffolding fell on top of cars – on Thursday afternoon (December 18).

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it was called at 1.30pm, amid ‘reports of collapsed scaffolding’ in First Avenue.

A fire service statement read: “One fire engine from Preston Circus was in attendance. Crews attended for scene safety, liaising with the police and the area was cordoned off.

“There were no reports of any injuries.

“Crews left the scene by 3.16pm, handing over to the main building contractor.”

AA Traffic News reported that the road was partially blocked – both ways between A259 Kingsway and B2066 Church Road.

This came after a yellow warning was issued for Sussex, amid the risk of heavy rain and strong winds. The Met Office warning will be active until 9pm.

"Heavy rain on Thursday may cause disruption to travel with some flooding possible in a few places,” the government agency said.

"Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely.”

The warning covers the entirety of Sussex and the majority of Surrey.

The Met Office added: “Widely 15-25 mm is likely across the warning area, but 40-50 mm may fall in some places, most likely over the Downs.

"In addition, the rain will be accompanied by strong winds, with a chance of gusts approaching 60 mph on exposed southern coasts, and 40-50mph possible inland."

Rain will ‘clear to the east by the end of the day’, the Met Office predicted.
