Emergency services have responded to a collision outside the Lyons Farm retail park in Worthing.
Pictures from the scene show a light blue hatchback with a badly damaged front end alongside a similarly disfigured white Ford Transit van.
Sussex Police were on the scene on the A27, at the traffic lights marking the junction with Sompting Road.
Traffic was reported to be queuing eastbound after the accident was first reported shortly after 2.30pm.
