Emsworth bus shelter to be renovated

The bus shelter in Emsworth square is not widely known to be the town’s first war memorial, erected after the second world war in tribute to those who had lost their lives.

It has suffered over the years and is in need of minor repair works, an improvements to make it more recognisable as a memorial.

The Emsworth Business Association has been given a helping hand from the 47 Regiment Royal Artillery, based at Thorney Island who donated their time to sand it down, repainted it, and replaced parts of the rotting wood.

The window panels are being replaced with a special design on some of them, and the plaque is being replaced.

Chairman of EBA Brendan Gibb-Gray said: “We would like some donations to help with it. It is going to cost £2,500 that would have been a lot more had it not been for the support of the best army in the world.

“It’s a unique thing, the British Legion had never heard of a bus shelter memorial before.

“We are bearing in mind this is a conservation area.”
