Work is underway to repair a badly leaking roof at St Mary’s Church in Northiam.

Church Secretary Geoff Brown said: “Most of the gutters, hoppers and downpipes have been replaced or refurbished and the lead roofing repairs are finished.

“This means the terrible leaks we have experienced in recent years should be a thing of the past and the rain water will flow away nicely.

“Stonemasons, led by Mike Nevin, have done an amazing job in repairing, recarving and replacing stone where necessary.

“Inside the church they have been cutting away failed sections of plasterwork, some of which were soaking wet, and replacing them with proper lime and horsehair plaster.

“This has been a very messy job and I have to thank them not only for their masonry skills but in their tidying up after all this dusty work. Nothing has been too much trouble.

“It allowed the funeral of Mary Shipstone to go ahead in a dignified way.”

“I am still awaiting the completion date but the aim is to have the church functioning as normally as possible by December 13.”
