A sheep attack near Rother this week has prompted police to put out a warning to dog owners.

The attack, reported to Sussex Incidents Twitter, occurred on the morning of Friday (May 14) at a farm in Ticehurst. A dog was seen chasing sheep and resulted in a lamb being mauled to death.

Sussex Police rural crime team are looking into the incident, but it has prompted officers to warn dog walkers of the rights farmers have in these situations.

A statement from police said, “We would always encourage dog owners to keep their dogs on a lead while in rural areas near livestock.

“Owners can legally shoot a dog that is chasing livestock and seek compensation from the person responsible for the animal, so please don’t take the risk and keep your dog on a lead if in doubt.”
