Gwyn Jones' Farm Diary: September 8, 2005

If the British summer is a few days of sunshine, followed by a thunderstorm, we have just had another one! Fabulous weather in the week, quite remarkable for September, and a nice ending for the school holidays.

I try and wear shorts right the way through September, and at this rate it will be a breeze this year. The ground is rock hard, and growth has slowed down, but there is still plenty of grass after the rain in August.

It was so hot this last week that the badger at Tillington slept during the day with his head and shoulders hanging out of the set. He took no notice of our activities.

I have now received both dairy production, and beef certificates for Farm Assurance. This has to be done every eighteen months or so, and with the cull cows likely to re-enter the food chain at the end of the year, I needed to be assured for beef to make sure I have a good market for them, and of course any calves I sell.

Every year we have a few extra rules to comply with, and this year we have to keep two more files.
