Slow worms, frogs, grasshoppers, butterflies and bees are just some of the creatures that thrive in the grassland, flower meadow, orchard, herb garden and edible hedgerow at Cortis Avenue Wildlife Garden, a hidden garden in the heart of Broadwater.

Nathalie Hadjifotiou, secretary, said: “The annual open day was very successful last year.

“This year, as well as a children’s bug hunt, we have a talk about butterflies and their food plants. Hopefully, if the weather is good, they should be flitting across the garden and ponds along with the dragonflies.”

The open day runs from 1pm to 4pm and there will be lots to see and do for people of all ages.

The children’s bug-hunt will be at 1.30pm and 2.30pm, the butterflies and moths talk will be at 2pm and 3pm.

Visitors can see how the garden volunteers recycle food and green waste to make great compost and get ideas on making a wildlife haven in their own garden or balcony.

There will be another open Saturday on September 30, 1pm to 4pm, and the garden is open most Wednesday mornings, 10am to 12.30pm.
