A school teacher in my youth could draw a spot of blood the size of a holly berry out of his thumb in order that we could study the body's liquid under the microscope.I can't remember what we discovered, only the bright bead growing as he breathed deeply.

Then I heard another teacher , though we called them masters in those days, saying cryptically,: "We'll have to call Matron if he draws more than a ruscus berry."
