Waste company fined after allowing litter spill on A24

Waste company Viridor have been fined after pleading guilty to allowing litter to blow from one of its vehicles while travelling along the A24.

The prosecution took place at Crawley Magistrates Court on Wednesday March 26.

Andrew Baldwin, Horsham District Council’s cabinet member for the environment, said: “Horsham District Council is taking a robust approach to this. Vehicles carrying loads to and from waste disposal sites will be subject to inspections.

“We will be vigorously prosecuting people who are seen either dropping litter from vehicles or drivers seen not securely protecting their load.

“It costs the Horsham district taxpayer over £2,000 each day the council has to cordon off the road and hire safety vehicles to pick litter from the central reservations on dual carriageways.

“As well as costing the taxpayer money, this causes inconvenience to motorists while the road is sectioned off.”
