Williamson's Weekly Nature Notes

IT was a clear case of out of the frying pan into the fire for the little dormouse last year in my garden. I photographed one on my bird table eating bread out of a frying pan.

She was quite tame, as dormice often are. She let me get very close and did not even blink when the shutter on my Pentax clattered. She was there for several days and then disappeared.

About a week later when I was sitting at my typewriter, I began to smell something unpleasant. The next day a bluebottle came in the open window and started cruising around the writing room. I had to leave the window, so more arrived.

I hunted through my study expecting to find a dead shrew. I pulled out all the books from the shelves-nearly a thousand. Nothing.
