Exhibition for pioneering printmaker

A MAJOR exhibition will take place in Lewes exploring the work of the town's pioneering printmaker George Baxter.

Called George Baxter '“ a son of Lewes, it will feature a collection of more than 500 prints and memorabilia.

The Victorian printmaker is regarded as the inventor of colour printing.

The event has been organised by Lewes Town Council, with the support of the New Baxter Society. It will be held at Lewes Town Hall from July 21 to August 2.

Steve Brigden, Lewes Town Council clerk, said: 'The last time that an exhibition was held to celebrate the life and work of this remarkable Lewesian was in 1967, since then Lewes Town Council's collection of Baxter prints and memorabilia has grown to over 550 items.

'We hope to bring the story of this unusual and gifted man alive for another generation, with an exhibition of the best from the collection in the grand Assembly Room at the Town Hall.

'Also on display will be several rare and unusual prints and other items, loaned by members of the New Baxter Society, and Maidstone Museum.

'Expert collectors from the society will be on-hand on August 2, to talk about Baxter and offer appraisals of any Baxter prints the public may bring along.'
