EXTRAORDINARY CLIMBER TO VISIT TOWN

Alan Hinkes is one of the 13-strong international elite who have climbed to the summit of all of the world's fourteen 8,000 metre peaks and lived to tell the tale.

He climbed for 18 years, took part in 28 expeditions and 47 miles of vertical ascent to become the first Briton to make the list.

Alan's success is down to both climbing skill and determination and he describes how he went on climbing in spite of numerous broken limbs and a prolapsed disc.

In some cases he had to return to mountains several times before conquering them.

Alan's first big peak was Shisha Pangma which he climbed in 1987.

This year he achieved his lifelong ambition to top the 8,587-metre Kangchenjunga '“ the world's third highest mountain and recognised as one of the hardest mountains to conquer.

His talk, The Full Mounty, highlights the highs and lows of his career and combines videos and images from previous expeditions.
