Fairlight Village Voice

Craft better than Fair… Despite copious, attractive advertising, the Village Hall’s Craft Fair was a disappointing affair, with the excellent quality and range of goods on offer being in inverse proportion to the pitifully few who attended the event.

One felt for the Hall committee, whose efforts were so ill rewarded, and even more for the stallholders, who couldn’t sell their excellent wares to people who didn’t turn up. Ah, well, back to the drawing board…

Tickets, please… Tickets for the Players’ Autumn production, Ray Cooney’s Funny Money, go on sale at the Post Office from Monday next.

And ‘tickets’ is what they will be, with the programmes following at each performance, being on sale when you get there. And do get there, because the play promises to be very funny indeed.

The show runs from Thursday 11th to Saturday 13th November, at 7.30 pm nightly, with a matinee at 2.30 pm on the Saturday.

The Players deserve to sell out, but seldom do. You could make all the difference…!

Is it catching?... Notice was given of the works about to start, on Monday next, to attempt to cure the water leakage where Meadow Way meets Waites Lane/Shepherds Way, but meanwhile it appears that Knole Road has come out in sympathy, with a constant bubbling seepage of water turning the southern verge into a brown-stained quagmire near the junction of the road with Waites Lane.

What price a freezing disaster here, instead of Meadow Way, in a couple of months time if nothing is done to rectify this situation?

It’s goodbye from him… John Miles, for the past ten years caretaker of the Village Hall, has given up his job to take a well-earned rest.

While we wish him well away from the Hall, he won’t be far away, as it seems that he and his wife, Eve, are always busy attending to St Peters Churchyard, where they have made enormous improvements to the hedging and, especially, the bank adjacent to the Village Hall car park. It’s all Miles better…! New to the Caretaker’s job will be Sithia Ball, whose details will follow.

Put it on the slates… The Quiz Night in the Village Hall last Saturday was very successful, despite the fact that several potential participants had alternative attractions to attend.

Some 40 people enjoyed their evening, with a team called simply ‘Us’ running out the winners, comprised of five women and one man (we can see who’s got the brains, then!) A total of some £240 was raised for the roof of St Andrews.

Hiya, Watha… The Literary Society has a very interesting lecture in prospect next Wednesday, 27th October, at 2.30 pm in the Village Hall.

The subject is North American Indians, and the speaker will be Alison Hawkins from Hastings Museum. Will Grey Owl get a mention?

Something completely different… The Floral Club’s meeting this coming Thursday, 28th October, at 2.15 pm in the Village Hall, will feature a talk entitled Shirley’s Leaf and Petal Factory, (a local company,) which will be given by Brenda Wilson.

Very different and very interesting, too!

Lest We Forget… Though it is very active throughout the year, the Royal British Legion is most in the public eye at the time of the annual Poppy Appeal, which I guess most of us support each autumn.

Inevitably, the Appeal date comes round each year, but it doesn’t all happen automatically - there has to be a team involved in the preparations. John Pulfer is the Legion’s Appeals organiser and, as we reported in August, he could do with some help.

You need to be fit, and will be allocated a reasonably small area, and you’ll work in the knowledge that the help you give is invaluable to the Legion.

October and November are the Legion’s busiest months, and if you are able to spare a little of your time over the coming few weeks, please call John on 814866. The British Legion’s work continues to be as relevant and of today as ever it was. Make that call!

Close your eyes… but not before you’ve read this. Hypnosercise is coming to the Village Hall on Wednesdays at 6.30 pm, commencing on 3rd November.

Victoria Griffin will be running these sessions, which combine relaxation and breathing techniques with basic movements to give all the benefits of a workout while you are lying down.

You should wear loose, comfortable clothing and take a mat or blanket on which to lie. You will also need to take £5 per session.

Early notice… The Fairlight Residents’ Association will be holding their Quiz Night on Saturday, 20th November at 7.00 for 7.30 pm. Tickets are £6 in advance, or £7 on the door, and there will be two new categories this year with a Radio and TV Theme round from the 50’s to the 80’s, and a Picture Identification round. Lyn Mosley, on 812144, has further details if you need them.
