Fallen tree cuts power to 300 homes

A village was plunged into darkness for several hours after a tree fell, damaging overhead power lines.

More than 300 homes in Rusper were left without power following the incident in Horsham Road on Saturday (November 26).

Firefighters from Horsham and Crawley were called at about 5pm to assess the scene. The electricity supply had already been isolated by engineers and crews left soon after.

A spokesman for the fire services said no-one was injured.

UK Power Networks said the problem initially affected 48 homes. Electricity supplies were turned off to a further 276 properties so engineers could work safely to fix the problem.

Power was restored to the 276 homes at about 6.45pm on the Saturday.

Engineers worked throughout the night and power was restored in stages to the remaining 48 homes by about 12.30am on Sunday.
