She was in hiding from Almorisse in Northiam. It is understood that Almorisse was known to police for domestic violence.

Mrs Shipstone wrote, in a Twitter posting: “We can leave the house without worrying about my husband bothering us.”

Last Friday police were searching a three-bedroomed semi-detached house in Broomfield Avenue, Worthing, which Almorisse is understood to have rented.

His next door neighbour Mr Carvey said: “He had lived there for a couple of years and I only spoke to him on a few occasions.

“He lived alone and I never knew he had a family. he was the sort of guy who kept himself to himself.

“He did not look like he would be capable of doing such a horrendous thing.

“The police have been knocking on everyone’s doors asking if they knew him.”

Neighbours of the couple in Liverpool told the national media that Mr Alromisse had been banned, by Social Services, from being alone with Mary, or Mrs Shipstone’s older son Stephen, who has autism, after claims that he hit Stephen.

A family friend said: “He used to hit Stephen. Stephen used to say: ‘He’s a bad man’”

Alromisse became a Community Safety Officer for Uttlesford District Council in Essex.

His job involved helping with projects to try to reduce crime.

Detective Chief Inspector Jason Taylor of Sussex Police said: “We are trying to establish Mr Alromisse’s movements prior to the incident and are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard from him.”
