Family's golf fundraiser in memory of George

THE loss of their first baby to meningitis in June this year was a devastating blow for young Bexhill couple, Alice Armstrong and Joseph Lyttle.

Their son, George, was just three weeks and five days old when he died.

Meningitis inflames the membranes around the brain and spinal cord, and is sometimes compounded by septicaemia (blood poisoning).

It has the potential to kill within hours, and most at risk are infants - as, tragically, in George’s case, teenagers, young adults and people over 55.

Coming to terms with George’s death has been a huge challenge for Joe, 24, a bricklayer, and Alice, 23, who is employed by a local estate agency, both of whom live in Victoria Road, Bexhill.

But on Sunday they were delighted by the support shown for a charity golf day they had organised at Sedlescombe Golf Club to raise funds for the Meningitis Trust.

The event was planned as both a memorial for George and to help other children and families affected by such a dangerous disease.

Alice said: “To be honest, it was as much to help us, giving us something new and worthwhile to focus on while never forgetting George, and we were just thrilled with the response.”
