Fears 600-home plan will be a ‘dormitory’ for Worthing

Scores of villagers scrutinised the planned layout of the new development at an exhibition inside the Angmering Village Hall, in Station Road, on Thursday.

But many were not impressed with the designs, in spite of developers’ promises to ‘significantly improve’ the congested A259.

Lesley Dainton has lived at her home in The Cottrells for more than a decade. Mrs Dainton was one of more than 100 villagers to attend the event.

Speaking of the plans, Mrs Dainton said: “I think it will ruin Angmering village and I believe that this is a real backward step.

“The new estate will not be part of the village. All it will be is a dormitory for Worthing. It’s a complete tragedy.”

A consortium of developers and Arun District Council officers have produced the masterplan.

The site for the new housing would include Worthing Rugby Club’s ground, and the West End Nursery site.

Developers insisted that the development would be twinned with improvements to the single carriageway section between Station Road and the Angmering bypass.
