Felpham Scout trio take top honours at swimming gala

Three Scouts from Felpham were winners when they took on their swimming rivals from around the country.

The top display among the 1st Felpham Sea Scouts and Explorer Scouts at the RN sea scout swimming gala came from Tom Holland.

He finished first in the u-16 breaststroke race.

Kerrie Lewis also did well by claiming the runners-up position in the u-16 backstroke in spite of being just 14.

Those two strong performances helped the Felpham u-16 team from the Arctic Fox Unit take third place overall.

In the u-14s, the scouts had a second spot thanks to a strong performance by 13-year-old Oliver Grubb in the freestyle final.

The gala took place at HMS Raleigh at Torpoint near Plymouth and a team of 12 from Felpham made the long journey.

They enjoyed plenty of action outside the swimming pool during their weekend stay.

Scout section leader Tim Holland said: "During their stay at the naval base, the scouts also competed in various skills challenges which tested their scouting prowess.

"They were also given the opportunity to drive power boats owned by the Royal Navy in Plymouth harbour."
