Felpham students helps Fijian villagers

Becky Newman has ensured villagers in Fiji can benefit from clean water and hygienic waste disposal.

She was so enthusiastic about being a volunteering she is set to improve another community in Ghana next year.

Becky, 18, said she was inspired to become a volunteer by her music teacher at Felpham Community College, Miss N Matthews.

“She introduced it as a means of focusing myself and a basis to change my poor and worrying behaviour.

“I am proud to say that, after the example set by her and others at the college at the time, I have now decided to take things a step further and show others that giving to others gives a lot back to yourself,” she said.

Becky spent almost three weeks in Fiji with Volunteer Eco Students Abroad. She stayed in a rural village, Burerua, about 90 minutes away from the capital, Suva.

The group installed the foundation for a water tank and fixed and redecorated nine classrooms and a library as well as teaching 11-year-olds maths, English, music and sport. They also built a waste disposal pit and shelter.
