Festive fare for German twin guests

CHRISTMAS markets in Germany provided plenty of opportunities for members of Littlehampton Twinning Association to shop for presents at the weekend.

The group of 25 made the 14-hour coach journey to Littlehampton’s twin town of Durmersheim on Thursday, accompanied by town mayor Jill Long.

All stayed with host families, including some with links that have been established for many years. On Friday, there was free time and most of the Littlehampton group travelled to neighbouring towns such as Karlsruhe, Ettlingen and Rastatt, or further afield, to the old city of Freiburg.

Each of these has its own Christmas market, selling tree decorations, festive food and drink, warm winter clothing, gifts, gluhwein – mulled wine – and much more. That evening, at Durmersheim’s Christmas market, burgermeister Andreas Augustin welcomed the English visitors.

He also spoke at an official welcome lunch in the Lamm pub in Durmersheim on Saturday, underlining the strength of the ties between the two communities, guests and their hosts, a sentiment echoed by Mrs Long.

Then it was time to travel to the nearby spa town of Baden-Baden for its large Christmas market on Saturday afternoon, before the long journey home on Sunday.
