In a Christmas message, Jill Long said that since taking up the role in May, the last few months had been ‘a roller coaster of visits and introductions’.

“So much has happened I hardly know where to start,” she said.

She explained she had been ‘stunned’ by the number of groups and individuals she’d met helping to make the town a better place.

“Now we’re looking ahead to winter, which offers time for both reflection and enjoyment. We all look forward to Christmas as an opportunity to share time and keep in touch with family and friends, old and new.

“We also love giving and receiving presents. Let’s not feel guilty about this and appreciate our blessings. Even though Christmas is a busy time for us all, we still need to make time for others.

“We need to think about the many people living alone, without friends or family, vulnerable neighbours, please keep an eye on them, especially in the cold months ahead.”

In her festive message, Mrs Long also thanked all those who would be working in the town over Christmas, including emergency services, care professionals and those keeping the roads and railways safe.

Concluded her winter statement, she said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my first eight months as Mayor of this vibrant and caring town and I hope to see many more of you at some of the town’s 2015 events. It only remains for me to wish you a very happy Christmas and a healthy new year.”
