A SUMMER fete held at Spring Pastures, Punnetts Town, on Saturday raised 916.56 for 400 orphans of Kabubbu in Uganda.

The funds will be used towards the supply of medicines and nursing for the orphans who attend a school built by Quicken Trust, the Hailsham based charity, which was opened by the British High Commissioner for Uganda, Tom Phillips, at the end of March.

A medical centre, currently under construction and donated by a Hampshire family, will serve not only the orphans but also the whole community. It is expected that the centre will be opened around August this year.

Full-time nursing staff will be provided together with medicines necessary to treat malaria fever, typhoid, syphilis and other common rural ailments in Uganda. The centre will also assist with the effects of AIDS.

A forthcoming 'Bike Ride to Uganda 2002' will further boost funds. This is a 48-hour non-stop fundraising event on static exercise bikes that takes place in Hailsham's Vicarage Field from noon on Friday July 12 until noon on Sunday July 14.

Many individuals, schools, clubs, churches and businesses have entered sponsored teams including Halcyon Print & Design and HKS Kitchens from Heathfield.
