They receive regular training to equip them with the skills to deal with fires, road traffic accidents and a wide range of other emergencies.

They also play an important role in community engagement activities.

Retained firefighters receive an annual retaining fee as well as additional payments for any incidents or community safety events they attend.

Retained Watch Manager at East Preston, Terry Matthews, said: “Our retained firefighters are men and women who come from all walks of life and who fit being a retained firefighter around their existing jobs and commitments.

“Even if you have never considered being a firefighter before, if you are up for a challenge then come along and give it a go. The event will be very relaxed, informal and commitment-free. Just come wearing comfortable clothing that is suitable for physical activity.”

The have-a-go-day will run from 10am until 2pm at the Fire Station on North Lane. It is open to anyone aged 18 and over. For more information or to book your place, email [email protected].
