Fire breaks out in St Leonards flats

A fire has broken out in a block of flats on St Leonards seafront this morning (Wednesday, January 20).

In a tweet, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) said firefighters are currently tackling the blaze in Marine Court.

A spokesman said: “Firefighters were called out at 7.03am this morning to reports of a fire in a basement in Marine Court.

“They are using main jets and breathing apparatus. Fourteen fire engines have been sent to the scene.

“There are no reports of casualties. Police and ambulance are also in attendance.

“Please avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed to avoid breathing in smoke.”

According to the AA, the A259 at Eversfield Place is closed both ways between Burton Way and Warrior Square as a result of this morning’s incident.

A detour is in operation for Stagecoach bus routes 98 and 99.
