Fire service supports Adult Learning Week

You're never too old to learn.

That's the message from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service at the start of Adult Learners' Week.

Chris Pascoe, Head of Community Safety, said: "Unfortunately, when it comes to safety lessons, many of us learn from our mistakes.

"For East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, the big problem with that process is that fire can be devastating in terms of the loss of property and lives, and it really is too late to learn after a fire."

ESFRS supports Adult Learners' Week because it promotes the message that you're never too old to learn.

Fires are easily prevented and a well-practised escape plan can maximise chances of survival. Following some simple rules will minimise the risk to yourself and your family:

- Get a smoke alarm, test it weekly and change the batteries every year (unless it's a ten year smoke alarm)

- Remember to have a last minute safety check at night before going to bed. Ensure that appliances are switched off, ashtrays are emptied into metal containers and left outside and close all doors.

- Avoid smoking if you are alone and have consumed alcohol.

- If you use a hot fat fryer/chip pan be mindful of interruptions - a phone call or a knock at the door can lead you to forget the cooker and can result in a devastating fire.

ESFRS offers free Home Safety Visits and smoke alarms. To arrange a visit, please call 0800 1777069 or use the online booking service at www.esfrs.org
