Fire tears through Northiam

A COUPLE had a lucky escape after their Northiam house went up in flames on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the property, on the junction of Beales Lane and Main Street, at 3.30pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters using breathing apparatus and foam brought the blaze under control. Four engines were involved with units from Broad Oak, Rye and Battle at the scene.

The ladder unit from the Ridge at Hastings was also involved.

Chris Sands said: “It was a bad fire. The building is timber framed and the fire quickly went through it into the roof space.

Firefighters returned to the scene later that evening to damp down the site and were at the scene again on Wednesday morning.

An investigation into the cause is underway but it is believed the fire started when a car in a garage caught light.
