Firefighters rescue stag stuck in electric fence

Crews received the call at around 11:35am to reports of the stag, thought to be around a year old, with his antlers stuck in an electric fence and barbed wiring, near Nettlesworth Lane.

A fire engine from Heathfield was sent to the scene, along with the animal rescue unit from Crowborough.

The unit includes an off-road Land Rover, as well as a purpose-built Mercedes four-by-four Unimog off-road appliance, designed to provide assistance with animal rescues.

This is fitted with a hydraulic crane capable of lifting farm animals from open water and ditches.

Crews liaised with the landowner and the RSPCA and managed to release the animal.

Members of the public who see animals in distress are urged to call local animal charities or the RSPCA first, so their experts can decide whether the fire and rescue service is needed.
