Fireworks safety message to ring out in Angmering

A firework safety message is being given to children across the Arun district this week

The Safer Arun Partnership is launching Operation Sparkler on Wednesday (October 23) to spread the message ‘have fun, but be safe’.

Between Wednesday and Friday officers from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Sussex Police and Arun District Council’s anti-social behaviour team will be visiting The Angmering School, on Thursday (October 24) as part of a district-wide tour of secondary schools.

The joint teams will be presentation to Year-seven morning assemblies on firework safety and the implications that irresponsible behaviour around fire has on the community.

Sarah Gittus year team leader for Year-seven said: “The safety of our students is paramount, whether in school or out.

“This is a very important campaign especially in the run up to half term when students will be thinking of Hallowe’en and fireworks night.”

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Deputy District Commander for Arun, Dave Benham, said: “Fireworks can be fun, but can also be dangerous if not handled properly. We urge that the utmost care is taken with their storage, handling and use, whether you are organising a display for the family, friends or the general public.

“West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service want you to have a safe event and by following some simple do’s and don’ts risks can be greatly reduced.”

Sussex Police Sergeant, Roy Hodder, added: “Working in partnership on Operation Sparkler over the years has shown some excellent results in reducing the number of incidents involving damage and disorder over the Hallowe’en and bonfire period.

“We want to make this an enjoyable and safe time for the entire community, but also try to engage the neighbourhood in considering those who do not wish to be involved in such activities as ‘trick or treat’ and respecting their wishes.

“We do urge people, where possible, to consider attending organised firework displays within their local neighbourhoods.”

The Safer Arun Partnership has given advice on enjoying the bonfire and Hallowe’en period safely this year.

• Keep fireworks in a closed metal box and take them out one at a time.

• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on each firework. Read them by torchlight – never a naked flame.

• Light fireworks at arm’s length using a safety firework lighter or fuse wick.

Members of Sussex Police, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Arun District Council and Sussex Ambulance Service will also be doing a roadshow to pass on advice and warnings about inappropriate behaviour associated with Hallowe’en and fireworks.

On Monday (October 28) the team will appear at Morrisons, in Wick, between 10.30am and 12.30pm and then at Asda, in Ferring, from 3pm until 5pm.
