Firm admits selling software illegally

Instead, the business in The Arcade has agreed to work more closely with Microsoft to ensure it no longer sells unlicensed software.

Michael Corner, from CornerStone Computer Centre Ltd, said: "We recognise that, on this occasion, we were dealing with Microsoft software incorrectly and have since worked co-operatively with Microsoft to ensure this does not happen again.

"It's good to see Microsoft working with small, local retailers like ourselves to ensure that we are fully informed about the rules of software usage and remain compliant at all times."

The Bognor store was among 13 around the country who admitted dealing in unlicensed software. Microsoft aims to protect consumers who are vulnerable to computer viruses and identity theft when they use this software, and to support genuine businesses whose livelihood is endangered by unscrupulous traders.

Microsoft UK head of anti piracy Michala Wardell said: "Microsoft is determined to protect customers from the pitfalls of unlawful software and is committed to working with local businesses to stress the importance of selling genuine computer programs.

"This latest success in clamping down on the sale of illegal software underlines just how important it is for Microsoft to work on a local level.

"It's our job to ensure customers aren't ripped off when they buy Microsoft computer programs."

Unlicensed software is a common type of piracy. People may copy a programme and give it to friends or family without realising this is piracy. It also occurs when an organisation installs software on more computers than its licences allow.
