Families in Brighton are being invited to step right up for an evening of comedy, chaos, excitement and larger-than-life circus danger as Circus Calamitous comes to Brighton Open Air Theatre on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 June at 2pm.

Written by BAFTA-nominated TV comedy writer Justin Sbresni and actor Stewart Wright, Circus Calamitous is a fast-paced family comedy inspired by the traditions of travelling circuses from years gone by, blending slapstick humour with daring circus spectacle.
The show follows self-proclaimed “World’s Greatest Showman” Rex Bartholomew, whose internationally renowned circus spectacular hits an unexpected snag when a clerical error sends the entire troupe to the wrong venue… 100 miles away. Left to save the day are Rex and his long-suffering stagehand Darren, who must somehow perform every act themselves, from juggling and lion taming to bullet catching and fire eating.

Packed with mishaps, audience participation, squirting water, custard pies and the unforgettable appearance of ‘Childeater’ the Lion, the production combines the spirit of circus, pantomime and classic comedy for audiences aged six and above. Alongside the laughs comes plenty of theatrical jeopardy, with whip cracks, daring stunts and explosive surprises helping to recreate the thrilling atmosphere of a traditional big top show.
Preview performances in 2025 included shows for schools and community groups, as well as appearances at the Bath Fringe Festival and an International Festival of Circus and Outdoor Arts.
Stewart Wright said: “Circus Calamitous is all about joyful chaos. We wanted to create something that captures the magic, silliness and unpredictability of old-fashioned circus entertainment while giving families a chance to laugh together. It’s loud, ridiculous and full of heart - and we can’t wait to bring it to Bristol.”
The production also features circus consultant Ben Kirby, who audiences may recognise from his long-running collaborations with Stewart Wright on the much-loved Santa and Sven Christmas shows that have entertained Bristol families for many years.

Content warnings include loud bangs and whip cracks, a prop gun on stage, smoke and haze, inferred live snake, fake blood and swords. Ear defenders are recommended for audience members with sensitive hearing.
