Flower Festival tribute tolong standing stalwarts

THE annual Flower Festival at St George’s Church, Brede, this weekend will pay tribute to two women who have plated a key role in its 34 year history.

This year the festival is dedicated to Betty May, who sadly died recently, and Sylvia Butler, who has recently retired.

The Festival started as a way for the flower ladies of Broad Oak and Brede, led by Betty May and Sylvia Butler, to welcome a party from Frécamp in Normandy who were visiting the church.

Sue Sturmey, the Flower display coordinator, said: “This year we wanted to do something to remember the themes of the thirty years in which they were involved. Displays will include “Songs of Praise”, “People of the Old Testament”, “Marriage and Family Life” and “Famous Women” amongst many others as a tribute to their hard work and enthusiasm over the years.

Last year there were over 1,300 visitors to the Festival, some who had come from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany and the Netherlands.

The Festival is open on Saturday and Monday from 10am to 5pm and on Sunday from 10:30am to 5pm. Refreshments, lunches and teas will be available and there will be various stalls and a grand raffle.

Weather permitting, trips up the Tower will allow people to enjoy the amazing views over the Brede Valley. Admission is free, donations would be welcome.
