Flytippers on Buxton Drive

Beer cans, soiled nappies, plastic bags full of waste and rubbish - it all gets chucked into the alleyway on Buxton Drive opposite Canada Way.

Now angry resident Andrew Perrin is asking why Rother District Council fails to take action against flytippers.

He has lived in Buxton Drive for 31 years but never experienced flytipping at this level before and describes the problem as "horrendous".

He told the Observer: "It's been going on since Summer. I phoned Rother and was told they would send someone over to clear it up but they never did."

The alleyway is now blocked to him transporting work material along the back of the house - he now takes everything through the house instead - and he says other local residents complain they cannot allow their children to go in because of broken glass and other hazards lying around.

Mr Perrin said: "If this had been in the Cooden area of Bexhill, no doubt this would have been immediately cleaned up...I am sure the same day as being reported.

"The lack of care is so bad that I wonder why I pay the Council Tax? I'm one of the very few that do up this road, the rats must be smiling everyday here, and this has all come about because of the fortnightly bin collection."

He claims that the alleyway was in the past cleaned up twice a year and added: "It always used to be spotless. We never got any rubbish there, it was just clean and you could walk through there easily. It was really nice - but now it is just horrendous."

Rother District Council's head of environmental health Richard Parker-Harding said, "The alleyway has not been adopted by the Council, the responsibility for keeping it clear lies with the owners of the land, a Housing Association. However, the occupiers of the properties should not be leaving waste in their alleyway. We will be investigating the complaint and we will be contacting the housing association about getting the alleyway cleared."
