Ford prison affected by having to accept short-term prisoners

FORD prison, near Arundel, is unable to concentrate on its role of resettlement of long term offenders because it is having to accept short-term prisoners, so that it is now seen as a holding centre, says a report issued last week.

A continuing lack of investment in Ford prison, near Arundel, coupled with problems of having to accept short-term offenders and high levels of long term and genine sick absence among staff, had created a difficult year, says the annual report of the Independent Monitoring Board.

Board chairman Zsa Roggendorff JP stressed that the prison could not be required to lower its standards to accommodate budgetary requirements.

"We have every sympathy with the governor and senior management team in these times of negative budget," she said.
