Former Worthing church granted alcohol licence

DESPITE objections from neighbouring residents, Worthing licensing councillors have approved a drinks licence for the former St Paul's Church in Chapel Road.

A borough licensing committee approved an alcohol licence for Lime Food Design Ltd, which runs a caf at the St Paul's Community Centre.

The original application was to sell alcohol with meals from 10am to 11pm, Monday to Saturday.

But the committee approved a 10.30pm limit on alcohol sales, and it is also a Sussex Police condition that when open to the general public, all alcohol must be delivered to seated customers, and drunk in that location.

At private, pre-booked functions, drinking may take place at a bar. Also, CCTV is to be installed, with an image storage of at least 28 days.

In addition to opposition from nearby residents, Central Ward Residents' Association wrote that the premises had already been granted an entertainment licence, and it was felt that alcohol sales would cause the noise levels to rise considerably.

This would particularly affect residents in the adjoining Old Vicarage, as the walls between had no sound-proofing.

Centre manager Hille Cook said after the hearing: "I have worked in many venues and I have been impressed by Lime Food Design's due diligence in maintaining standards and also in raising those standards... a share of any profits will be ploughed back into the building's ongoing restoration fund to ensure it benefits the local community for decades to come."
