West Sussex Local Access Forum is supporting the campaign to restore access to the subway from Buckingham Road, so people do not have to wait at the level crossing gates.

Forum chairman Tricia Butcher said: “Re-opening the subway would be of great community benefit, allowing non-railway users to cross the line when the level crossing gates are closed.

“This would prevent any safety concerns about users attempting to cross the tracks instead of waiting behind the barriers.”

Adrian Towler, editor of the society’s Journal, said Southern Railway had so far only issued case reference numbers but the group was determined not to let the matter drop.
