French flag flies as Sussex stands in solidarity with Paris

The Brighton Wheel joined world-famous landmarks, including Wembley Stadium, Tower Bridge, Sydney Opera House, Empire State Building and Christ the Redeemer, in lighting up red, white and blue in a show of unity for the dozens of innocent people killed in the French capital on Friday night (November 15).

A Tricolore is flying outside Worthing Fire Station and Worthing Town Hall today (Sunday, November 15), while a three-minute silence was observed in Arundel Town Square to mark the three days of mourning in France.

Yesterday, the French flag on Memorial Green in Newhaven was lowered to half mast as a mark of respect.

Mayor of Newhaven, Cllr Steve Saunders, said: “Cllr Robertson and Cllr Botting contacted me early on Saturday morning. They knew we flew the French flag at our Memorial Green, in recognition of our close ties with France from the two world wars and, in particular, the Canadian Dieppe Raid of 1942.

“It seemed obvious to us all that we needed to stand side by side with our friends in France and make this small, but poignant gesture of support for their country’s mourning and grief.

“At times like this, we must stay strong together and offer what comfort we can.”
