Full bloom for Walberton Horticultural Society

Warm and sunny weather was perfect for the Walberton Horticultural Society's autumn show.

Its fourth and final show of the year was held at the village hall in The Street, Walberton, and was also one of the most popular, with around 240 entries.

Society secretary David Campbell said: "Some magnificent dahlias immediately caught the eye as one entered the hall.

"Visitor numbers were above average for an autumn show and outside the entrance to the building a pumpkin of gigantic proportions was exhibited by Jack Etherington.

"Considering the recent very dry and usually cool conditions, the horticultural classes, including the floral art, surprised one by the high standard of most of the entries, and only a few classes had no exhibits.

"Apart from the horticultural classes the domestic section attracted a considerable number of entries, in particular various types of jam, with some regular exhibitors also vying for first class in the other classes.

"As usual the floral art section entries displayed the artistic abilities of the exhibitors.

"The two vegetable sections both, to a certain extent, reflected the effects of the recent dry weather compared with the entries at the summer show."

For the first time the autumn show had a children's class for a sunflower head, won by Amelie Rose.

In the afternoon the show was open to the public and attracting many visitors, many of whom stayed for light refreshments and the raffles.

At the close of the show society president David Donovan thanked everyone who had helped to make the day a success.
