Full steam ahead - or not

EXCITED day-trippers waited at Worthing Pier for the Waverley paddle steamer '” but the famous boat never arrived.

Due to the bad weekend weather the trip from Worthing to Yarmouth and Bournemouth, on Monday, was given a new starting point in Southampton.

The 300 passengers were told the bad news and offered a coach to Southampton to continue their trip, an offer most took up.

Kathleen O'Neill, general manager for the Waverley excursions company, said: "Although the weather had calmed down by Monday, the water had swelled and the ship would have been hitting the pier. The gangway would probably have fallen into the water and been unsafe for the passengers."

The Waverley is due to set sail from Worthing Pier on Thursday, September 21, when it will travel past Seven Sisters and Beachy Head on its way to the White Cliffs of Dover.
