Future of activities at Hotham Park up for debate

A meeting this week will help to decide future activities in Hotham Park in Bognor Regis.

The get-together is aimed at individuals and group representatives who are interested in promoting art, drama, music, environmental projects and other activities which would fit comfortably within the park.

Rosemary Warren, the trust's chairman, said: "A change of emphasis in the trust's work means encouraging full use of the park facilities by both individuals and community groups, with the backing of the park manager and Arun District Council."

The trust evolved from the Friends of Hotham Park, formed by volunteers in the mid-90s, to protect the park's heritage as one of Bognor's most historic areas.

The trust came into being in 1998 and has met most of the objectives that were then set.

"As a charity it will, in accordance with its constitution, concentrate on the needs of the community, while continuing to keep a watching brief over the built and living heritage of the park," said Mrs Warren.

"The trustees feel there is now a need to widen activities in order to enable the park to reach its full potential as a community asset.

"It would, therefore, welcome new members to add a fresh perspective to the organisation."

In 2007, the trust was instrumental in obtaining 2.2m from the Heritage Lottery Fund to enable the district council to refurbish the park.

The trust has also raised 500,000 from various sources towards helping to preserve the 1794 Hotham Park House tower and clock (6,700), rejuvenating the ornamental pond area (5,000) and providing a children's playground in 2005 (18,000).

Much of the trust's income is from the annual country fair.

Events such as Carols in the Park and an Easter Parade provide extra support.

The meeting is being held by Hotham Park Heritage Trust at 7.30pm on Thursday, April 29, in the Regis Centre on Belmont Street.
