The big talking point of the day was a team from 12th Bangor Co Down, Northern Ireland, who contested the first box kart race between two Cub packs from different countries.

The Irish team made a fantastic start to their racing with a win over three times Supreme Champions 5th Chichester Cub Scout Pack.

Organiser Stephen Bell said: “During the day, the atmosphere around the raceway was electric, as Cub teams battled around the figure-of-eight circuit to get a place in the last 16, before quarter finals.

“After the heats, six newbie teams had made the cut for the knockout stage. Among these were 1st Tatthenhams (Surrey), Birdham and Witterings, Middleton on Sea and 12th Bangor NI.”

Littlehampton Sea Cadets entertained the huge crowd during lunch and after the qualifying heats, the Arundel and Littlehampton Scout Band took to the stage.

Mr Bell added: “The races after the heats were all hard-fought battles, with Cubs doing their best to get their pack a stage closer to the big one.”

The cubs from Bangor made it to the quarter finals, only to get knocked out by finalists Funtington and West Stoke. Other teams for the semi final were 12th Chichester, 1st Tatthenhams and Yapton and Ford, with 1st Yapton and Ford the eventual winners.
