George Osborne commits to A27 works at Chichester

In a detailed announcement on infrastructure spending released today (Thursday, June 27), chancellor George Osborne announced plans for a £100bn of spending to ‘modernise’ British infrastructure.

The report includes ‘upgrading’ six junctions on a three-and-a-half-mile stretch of the A27 at Chichester but no details on what these improvements will include.

It also includes funding for ‘feasibility studies’ to look at problems and ‘identify potential solutions’ to the A27 on the south coast, including Worthing and Arundel.

The stretch of road was named amongst some of the ‘most notorious and longstanding road hot spots in the country’.

“We are presenting a dynamic vision for the future of British infrastructure – and a fully costed and detailed plan of how we will get there,” said Mr Osborne.

“It includes proposals for the biggest investment in our roads since the 1970s, a plan, build and repair 200,000 affordable homes, and the long term certainty that our scientists and energy sectors have been crying out for.

“This is what the UK needs – a strategic, long term plan. It’s a plan to build, repair and renew our key infrastructure. And it’s a plan we hope the whole country can get behind.”
