Giant crane topples

A LORRY driver had a lucky escape when his vehicle toppled over on the Ropetackle site - and the crane section ended up in the River Adur.

The lorry and crane keeled over just before 10.30am on Monday.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Gary Towson said the driver had kicked his way through the cab window to escape. The river was at low tide at the time.

Berkeley Homes construction manager John Gaffney said the driver was not hurt, but was shaken by the incident.

Shoreham firefighters were on site during the morning to make sure the vehicle was safe, while they waited for two more cranes to right the lorry.

The two cranes lifted the lorry from its side in the afternoon.

The incident is being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive.
