Girl, 9, raises hundreds for charity

A nine-year-old girl has chopped off her long blonde locks to raise money for charity and make wigs for children who have suffered hair loss due to cancer treatment and other illnesses.

Abigail Bevis, who goes to Little Common School, had her hair cut on Thursday (March 23) for Red Nose Day, and has already raised more than £200 for her cause.

Before her haircut, Abigail’s mother Victoria Bevis said: “Abigail has lots of hair and gets lots of compliments about it – it’s her pride and joy, but she would like to help another child who has lost their hair through cancer or other illnesses by donating one whole foot of her hair to The Little Princess Trust.

“She would also like to raise money for Red Nose Day. I hope you’ll agree this is a really brave and lovely thing for her to do, so please give generously to Red Nose Day and show Abi and these brilliant charities your support.”

Afterwards, the proud mum added: “She was really worried about what her friends at school would say about her new shorter haircut, but they have mostly been supportive and she’s happy with her hair for now, but definitely wants to grow it back.”

In May last year, Abi took place in the 2km ‘Star Fish Races’ along Bexhill sea front, raising £185 for Tree of Hope children’s charity – another big challenge for her as she’s more of a sprinter.

Abi dances with Dance House UK and recently competed in the Eastbourne and Hastings dance festival, coming in second place in her modern solo. She’s also a blue stripe belt in karate.
