Girls help build school in Africa

Katie Perkins and Rosie Ford spent two weeks in the African country and had the chance to learn about a totally different life to the one they’re used to, helping build classrooms and working in the community.

Katie, who is 16 and lives in Butchers Lane, commented: “Swaziland was the most amazing experience. We all have learnt so much about oneself, each other and the people who live there. It was a great opportunity to do something for others who are less fortunate. It is a trip that will always be in my memory.”

They both had to raise £2,000 to go on the trip which is organised every summer by their school, Buckswood, in Guestling.

They were among 24 youngsters led by Giles Sutton, Headmaster of the school.

Jim Colston, Director of Buckswood Football Academy and who also runs SAFA training courses in Horntye Park, coached youngsters out in Swaziland and was able to pass on football kit donated by local teams.

The group also donated a borehole to provide water to the community and paid for 60 fruit trees.

Seventeen-year-old Rosie Ford, from The Close in Fairlight, said: “This was an experience of a life time and a real eye-opener. I was fascinated by all the different cultures. It made me realise how very lucky I am and appreciate all the opportunities I have back home.”
