Golden theme for Carnival

THE COUNTDOWN has started for next month's Bexhill Carnival with an appeal to residents to make this year's Golden Jubilee-themed parade of floats bigger and better than ever before.

The event kicks off on July 21 and runs throughout the week.

Organisers hope one of the highlights will be the procession on the final day, Saturday July 21, culminating in an afternoon of events in Polegrove where attractions so far include crusading knights, a funfair and a circus workshops featuring stilt walkers and jugglers.

The idea behind this year's theme is a nostalgic look back over the last 50 years and organisers are wanting entries from across the community, including schools and colleges, clubs and pubs, playgroups as well as individual families.

Floats will set off from Sidley and travel along Ninfield Road, go through the Old Town, down Buckhurst Road, on to Town Hall square and then the seafront before finishing at the Polegrove.

Anyone interested in taking part can pick up an application form from the Observer office on Sackville Road or telephone Les Whitmarsh on (01424) 220217.

Entries are also being invited for the Carnival soap box derby down Galley Hill on Tuesday 23 July. The rules for entries are; all vehicles have to be hand-built; teams can consist of a maximum of four people, one of whom must be over 18; vehicles have to be people-powered; engines and pedals are not allowed and all drivers must wear adequate protection.

Entry costs 5 per team. For further details contact Les Whitmarsh on the number above.
