The 80th anniversary of St Laurence's Church in Goring was celebrated with a special service and barbecue.

More than 80 people gathered in the church, on the corner of Sea Place and Brook Barn Way, to mark the occasion.

The service was led by the Rev David Burt, a former curate at St Laurence’s.

The church was packed as former members of the congregation, visitors, new members and friends from the parish church of St Mary’s joined regular attendees to celebrate the anniversary.

The Very Rev Christopher Campling led the prayers and the Rev Steve Gurr, another former curate, and his family went along to join in the worship and meet old friends.

The popular St Laurence music group performed and accompanied the enthusiastic singing.

Following the service, a barbecue was served with the help of some of the Girl Guides and a beautiful anniversary cake, made by Hannah Boyle, was presented.

There was a raffle, including prizes donated by shopkeepers and restaurants in Goring Road and Wallace Parade, and the finale was a display of dance by Nathan Krifdom.

Local warden Ruth Jepson said: “This event celebrated 80 years of worship at St Laurence’s and was a very fitting tribute to all the hard work people have put in and continue to contribute to make this church a beautiful, lively and friendly place to come.

“This year has been a very important one for St Laurence’s as we have been focused on building our congregation and making our services accessible to non-regular churchgoers.

“Having more than 80 people with us to celebrate just shows we are making great progress.”
