Grandad from Pagham puts skates on for charity

Rollerskating grandad Colin Kempson will be putting on his blades for a European event this weekend.

Pagham resident Colin, 72, will be among the 1,000-plus skaters in the Goodwood Roller Marathon helping the NSPCC and other good causes. He will skate a half-marathon over 13.1 miles on Sunday.

He said: “I expect to complete the distance in about an hour and a half. It’s good fun.”

Former printing industry engineer Colin, of the Mill Farm Estate, began rollerskating in 2009.

“I started because I wanted to go ice skating with my granddaughter but the nearest rink is at Gosport so it’s not really practical to keep going there,” he said. “I took up roller skating instead.

“I go along Bognor Regis prom once or twice a week for six to nine miles a time. I get a lot of good reactions from people with plenty of smiles and cheers.”

He can be backed at www.uk.virginmoneygiving having helped charities in the past two roller marathons.
