GRANTS FOR FLINT WALLS

THE Lewes Buildings Preservation Trust in its first year made 21 awards in its flint wall grant scheme, totalling more than £4,700.

The scheme was started with 2,000 given by Lewes Town Council and 2,000 from the Trust's own funds.

Now the scheme has been re-launched with 2,000 given by the town council and 2,000 by developer Rees Elliott.

Said John Lawrence, Trust chairman: 'There are few towns where flint walls are such a vital component of the local character as in Lewes.

'Many have existed for centuries and, inevitably, they need maintenance.

'Like any other building task the work requires the right materials and professional skill. Use the wrong mortar and the next frost will open up gaps; apply it carelessly and the result is a mess.

'Do it properly and the result will be a lasting memorial.'

An application form for a grant may be obtained from John Lawrence on 471148.

Grants are for half the cost of repair, up to a maximum of 250.

Added Mr Lawrence: 'There are numerous examples of walls around the town that have benefited from our support; one of the best examples is where a group of four owners in Juggs Close applied together, the result being a splendidly restored length of wall between their gardens and the lane.'
