Grateful biker raising brass

HELEN French and her friends in a brass band will be playing from the heart at a concert in Boston Stump next Friday.

Cornet player Helen, 16, is still recovering from a motorbike

accident in which she was badly injured six months ago.

She spent a couple of months in a wheelchair and this week she was delighted to have reached the stage where she could at last switch to walking sticks instead of crutches.

She says she owes a great debt to many people in Pilgrim Hospital's accident and emergency department, intensive care unit and on the

children's ward.

Now she hopes the concert on April 19 will raise a huge cash bonus for the band to hand over to the children's ward.

The programme also features items by the award-winning choir from St Thomas' Primary in Boston.

Helen, a member of the South Lincolnshire Youth Brass for 18 months, said: "The band has been really great and very supportive. I started playing the cornet again as soon as I could the children's ward even arranged for me to

practise while I was in hospital.

"The band was really keen to do something to help and we're

hoping to raise as much as possible at the concert for the ward."

Helen suffered injuries to her liver, bladder, pelvis, arm, leg and knee when she and her father, Alan, came off his motorcycle in the crash last October.

She got back on a motorcycle as soon as she could, however, and now travels from her home in Moulton to George Farmer Technology College at Holbeach each day on her own scooter with her walking sticks strapped on to the side!

Tickets for the concert, starting at 7.15pm, are available at 3 for adults and 1.50 for children from St Botolph's Church.
