Green councillor injured in crash names projects to make Chichester's roads safer

A councillor seriously injured while riding her bike has reiterated her determination to make the city's roads safer.

Now in recovery, Green Chichester city councillor Sarah Sharp is spearheading a number of projects and she wants others to join her.

Cllr Sharp said: “Two months ago today I was severely injured while riding my bike by a car on an arterial road in Chichester.

“I am more determined than ever to re-double my efforts to make Chichester’s arterial roads safer for all road users, but especially for those who walk and cycle.

“However I am still recovering from my injuries, so I will need more help in all the projects I am spearheading.”

Cllr Sharp broke her shoulder, six broken ribs and two cracked vertebrate and had to be airlifted to hospital when she was in collision with a car along Basin Way on December 11.

The first of a number of projects she is planning is Playing Out, a scheme to encourage children to get more exercise and enjoy the space where they live.

She is booking a series of workshops in schools on Thursday, April 21, and a drop-in lunch at St George’s Centenary Centre on the same day.

ChiCycle will have a stand at the Transition Green Fair on Saturday, April 23, is looking for volunteers to help run it.

Cllr Sharp will be giving a presentation on Monday, April 4 to the city council on Vision Zero, the major undertaking to reduce the number of serious injuries or deaths on the city’s roads to zero.

Cllr Sharp is also looking for British bikes so ChiCycle can enter this summer’s ‘Best of British’ Chichester Gala.
